Magic Theatre Poetry Reading Video

A few weeks back I had the opportunity to be a featured poet at an event called Magic Theatre Poetry. It is an event that occurs monthly in Chiang Mai. While there are a few moments that make me cringe in this video, I'm happy with the progress I've made as a poet. Even with the slip-ups, a couple sneaky "ums", and more than one momentary lapse of memory, I want to share this accomplishment with those who follow this blog.

Please enjoy my first feature set!

The Mermaid and the Gaucho

He was brought up to believe they were myths. Subjects of tales that sailors would tell, but were brushed off… the result of sea stroke or drink. The land lovers, they could never believe in anything they couldn’t see with their own two eyes. They never understood the word faith. But there was one, a gaucho. Not yet a man, but no longer a boy, at an early age he toyed with ideas of places and things that the river and springs in this small valley could never bring him.

He spent his time on the peak. From his perch, he could peer out into the vast, endless layers of rolling waves peeling off the sea. When he felt inspired, he would scale the loose rock and debris, so his feet could kiss the moist sand. While he feared the rough waters, it was here he did witness the burning sun’s embers fall so gracefully on her shimmering, slender torso. Though just a spark, it was enough to set his arid, prairie heart ablaze. When they caught eyes, the gaze; it could have been days that passed before her lips let out the sweetest hint of laughter, as she slipped back into the blue abyss. This moment would forever alter the gaucho’s landscape.

As with the sailors, his community could never believe the tales his eyes recanted. They told him the sea was dangerous, and only foolish men would venture into such treacherous depths. The valley offered all the water one could ever desire. Their words, though, might as well have been of another tongue. He preceded to frequent the peak and sand. Holsters empty, love drawn and at the ready, the steady flow with which the waves rolled in became his closest friend. Days would come and end, and with her sails drawn, she would ride in on the wind past the break and lay on the same rock that shot the fateful arrow; the arson in his chest still roaring. Some nights, he laid his head to rest on the battered shores, waking to find his rock invariably draped in her presence. Her bird song laugher his chariot to back from slumber. Their infatuation was drawn out until the season’s change. Days drew nearer where peaks wore cloaks of snow and ice.

He never spoke of where he would go, yet land lovers could only hope he hadn’t fallen victim to the intoxicating tales the sailors would tell. They feared he would lose his life the same as the deviant seaman. You see, fear is a funny thing. With it brings intent or paralysis, will these feeling pass over, or push to the brink of fruition? Those frozen days, robbing him of the sea’s breeze and sand pillow, where sleep had never felt so resonate, had him feeling some way. He would wait on the cliff’s peaks until his cheeks turned pink with the winter’s forsaken embrace, thinking and seeking out her fueling gaze to fan its kin flame now waining. Paining and pining for the shinning and shimmering sight that forever changed how he viewed this dwindling life. It seemed she had been absent for an eternity.

Fate’s soft strings rang on a day where the outcry and disdain from the land lover’s begin to seep into his lovelorn brain. He wondered if maybe his imagination had run astray…But from his perch he swore he saw the waves part; the sun tore through sheets of gray, illuminating the same spot he so adored, only to see her silky-linen frame lain. The amalgamate of fate and fear oozed from fluctuating limbs. Her finger beckoned, the peak and weary knees acquiesced, he floated past ice and snow. The sands welcomed him as if he was Odysseus returning to native soil.

Her gaze extended an invitation that his head accepted with no hint of hesitation. The water was past his knees before his fluttering feet had cognizance of their motion. The Gaucho, he had never learned to swim, but that could never stop him from diving into the ocean blue for a love he knew, more than anything he ever knew, was true. The aqueous transition felt nearly as warm as her coveted embrace, as they absconded into the uncharted bliss…

Shit festival goers say...

Recovering from festival hangover is the worst, but it's worth it for the things you learn, the people you meet, and the places you go...Summer camp 2014 was a success.

“It’s not unification, it’s mutual adoration.”

“I got pennies in my pockets but I’m picking fresh fruit.”

“I don’t want to be just some thirty year old selling ads to the miracle.”

“Twiddle, obviously.”

“Dude. For real, I fall in love with a new girl every second here.”

“This line is for the shitters, and this one is for the pissers.”

“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for”

“I can blame religion for all my commitment issues.”

“…and in that moment, i believed in miracles. But I know miracles don’t exist. What I had rediscovered was love.”

“Whose been in my spaceship before? Nobody? Strap in and enjoy the ride lunar virgins.”

“Why does this smell like soap?

“We are blessed to have with us tonight a talented musician who we all grew up watching. Please welcome to the stage Mr. John Popper of Blue’s Traveler throwing it down on the harmonica.”

“Why would they give us a book? OH, it is a book. I thought it was just a ripping audio book with music in the background.”

“Everything in moderation, even moderation.”

“I’m on LSD. I feel like it is just man’s interpretation of what we learn through mushrooms. Man is trying to replicate the experience.’ ‘ What about ecstasy?’ ‘…On a spiritual level, there’s nothing. But on a sensual level, wow…. I have a boyfriend’ ‘That’s OK.’ ‘ Bummer.”

“I’m gonna touch her so good she’ll think it’s grandpa.”

“I’ve been doing this a long time, man. I was a bit jaded. Nothing really made me jam anymore. You know cheese or further would make me sweat, but it didn’t click till I started hoopin’. This weekend, my moves, man, my moves really started to work … Shit my girlfriend’s gonna know I’ve been hoopin’ with other girls!”

“It was a big one!…spider that is.”

“High fives for good vibes.”

“Drink till I don’t know the meaning of alone, till that bullet flies to carry home.”

“Tonight I’m gonna do the things I wanna do, with the spirits rushing through my veins.”

“Team work makes the dream work.”

“I’ve been practicing celibacy a long time. For 5-6 years there has been no sex or self-sex. It’s been an experience though. Feeling this kind of purity is like no other feeling in the world. No drug can amount to the feeling of purity.”

“It’s days like these where I wanna wake up from this American dream.”

“Alright guys, let’s do a last call.’ ‘ Oh, I got it…LAST CALL!’ ‘ You can’t do that, those guys are in Umphrey’s. Go Ask them if they want another beer.”

“We got the Chicago Farmer coming up next to come Folk your face.”

“I don’t like building up my serotonin just to deplete it, you know? I feel like your body has natural levels for a reason. It’s like those guys who do coke so they can drink more. Sometimes you just gotta stop.”

The Night Before Departure

I don’t sleep the night before a trip. I don’t let it be known to those around me, but it seems that an astounding amount of guilt, fear, and regret overcome me as I begin to tackle my last minute packing. I feel like an animal backed into a corner. After all the goodbye drinks, hugs, winks, and “you’ll have such an amazing time’s,” have come and gone, it’s just me. I am alone. Standing only with my thoughts and empty bags, nestled in mounds of clothes and crap still waiting to be sifted through, before I leave this town one more time. Is it the last time? For some reason, the fact that this moment, this moment before I am leaving the place I was born, the place I’ve resided in for another go, the friends I’ve known, and the family who has been there for all the joys, tears, cheers, and jeers, I decide to exercise stoicism. Call it a crutch, but although I think far too much, I don’t like to show it. This night is always best spent solo.

Thoughts crash, not similar to waves, but lightning. Erratic, electric, enough to illuminate the night. Is this going to the adventure when loved ones have had enough? What am I gonna do with these piles of stuff? Whose gonna be here when that road weary van finally brings me home? Cuz these last minute errands, cruising the streets on my bike, with summer setting in, are reminding me of all the things I love in this old town. Maybe the road won’t lead to the places I’m told it goes, and maybe I won’t have the strength in my feet. Carried on by tired, faltering toes. God Damn, the girls in this town are looking pretty. I can’t help but think this transience is getting silly, or maybe limiting me in a way i’m not seeing, greater than the levels I feel I’m being elevated too…

But as the last shirt hits the bottom of the Goodwill sack, and the pack is filled to equilibrium between capacity and what I can carry on my back, I grab the keys. This is the path life has showed me. While I will never surrender to any suitors trying to take over owning me, I can’t wait to acquiesce to what the future holds. Some call it bizarre, while others may see it as bold, but I realize that I’ve always relied on a belief of the good things the future holds The things reserved for those who aren’t afraid to pursue it.

Rough audio and transcription of a new poem

So it's been quite some time since I've posted a poem on here. In fact, the last time was in 2009, right here! Anyways, I started writing this new poem awhile back, but a few recent occurrences made me actually finish it. It's a rough version, and the audio is pretty rough too (I'm in a guest house and was a little embarrassed to get too loud!). It is a very targeted poem, I'll admit, and some may realize what it is about. To be honest the majority of it was written about an experience pretty far back in the past, but a few lines were added and tweaked in the end to bring it to this state.

Though poems may come off harsher than our actual reality, for me, it's a great way to process and move on. I hope you enjoy, and as soon as I can think of a title and get a video of me reading it, I'll post it on here.

(untitled)

I got a tattoo.
It’s one I’ve been thinkin about for awhile.
It covers the better part of my back, and trickles down my arm like spring waterfalls before the snow melt inundates the stream.
It’s simple.
I like the way the colors blend into my back.
I got it sometime between when you said you didn’t want to see me and that you wanted to be friends. And I’ll pretend
That the unabashed laugh, and the smile a mile wide when you read the words plastered on my billboard eyes were perfectly normal responses between “just friends.”
But I draw the line when you mistook the prose below my brows, surrounding the nose for someone you once knew.
Someone who was beyond devoted Proselytized by your songs and psalms like the ubiquitous black lines framing your clandestinely brown eyes, I couldn’t remove the dogmatic blinders.
My fake guru I allowed you to renovate the plot once housing my essence. But today is a new day.
Through ablutions and purification i’ve eradicated the yolk once extending from your gaze. You would have to be crazed to think that this man now momentarily found in your presence will shy away from calling you out on your bullshit.
Though I have unreciprocated respect for your beliefs in reincarnation, my cross cultural examination has led me to the brink of realization of new manifestation emerging with the each passing dawn. I’m not wrong when I say that today I’m changed. Though the resemblance is uncanny, like the transmuted skin on my back you’ll never embrace, you’re not any part of the happiness now etched permanently on this epidermal canvas. My face may appear the same, but the newly acquired wrinkles, like rivers from the pristine ocean adorning my eyes, tell tales of smiles you neither aided nor created. Aging scars may house your remnants but they are no impediment to forward progress, only talismans of mistakes that will never again resurfaced.
So of friends, I say one should not pour foundation on malleable land, and deceit is shallow soil and if you love him, let your union flourish by not stowing it away from the light. And now that he’s found the strength ot drop on one knee, embellishing anxiously awaiting finger with a promised ring, I hope you have the tact to cease from contacting me. You don’t want that rock to scratch your phone’s screen.
I’ll tell you there is not one ounce of disgrace, in this new verity I’ve embraced…that I wish you the best in all your endeavors. Triumphs, failure, ebbs, flows, falls and ascensions to grace. But I pray I’ve already lived through the last time I’ll ever see your face.
